Rajnath Singh Warns West Bengal Goons: Jail or 'Upar'

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday issued a stern warning to criminals in West Bengal, asserting that those involved in violence and crime will either end up in jail or 'upar' (above). Addressing a public rally in Kolkata, Singh's remarks come amid escalating political tensions in the state ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

Strong Message to Miscreants

Singh, without naming any political party, said, 'The goons in West Bengal should know that they have two options: either they will be in jail, or they will be 'upar' (above). There is no third option.' He emphasized that the central government is committed to maintaining law and order and will not tolerate any form of violence.

Rising Political Violence

The defence minister's warning follows a series of violent incidents in the state, including clashes between rival political groups and attacks on opposition party workers. Singh accused the state government of failing to ensure the safety of citizens and allowing a climate of fear to prevail.

  • Singh highlighted the recent murder of a BJP worker in North 24 Parganas district.
  • He also referred to the attack on a BJP leader's residence in Kolkata.
  • The minister called for strict action against those responsible for such acts.

Central Government's Stand

Singh reiterated that the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is determined to uproot crime and corruption from the country. 'We will not spare anyone who tries to disturb the peace and harmony of the nation,' he said.

The rally, attended by thousands of BJP supporters, also saw Singh launching a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, accusing it of promoting a culture of violence and hooliganism. He urged the people of West Bengal to vote for change in the upcoming elections.

Political Reactions

The TMC responded sharply to Singh's remarks, calling them 'divisive' and 'irresponsible'. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, 'The defence minister should focus on national security rather than making inflammatory statements. The people of West Bengal are capable of handling their own affairs.'

Meanwhile, the BJP welcomed Singh's strong stance, with state president Sukanta Majumdar stating that the party is committed to restoring peace and order in the state.
