RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Highlights Tribal Society's National Importance in Ranchi Address
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) sarsanghchalak Mohan Madhukar Bhagwat delivered a significant address during the 'Janjati Samvad Karyakram' event in Dibdih, Ranchi, on Saturday, emphasizing the critical role of tribal communities in India's national fabric. Bhagwat articulated that the challenges faced by tribal society resonate across the entire nation, drawing a powerful analogy: "Just as pain in one part of the body affects the whole body, problems of the tribal society impact the entire nation." This statement underscored his message of unity and interconnectedness within the country's diverse social structure.
Bhagwat's Perspective on Sarna, Hinduism, and Tribal Identity
During his speech, Bhagwat addressed the concept of Sarna, clarifying its spiritual significance. He stated, "Sarna is a form of worship and not a religion." Expanding on this, he described Hinduism as not merely a specific worship system but a comprehensive way of living together, promoting harmony and coexistence. Bhagwat warned against societal divisions, noting that such fragmentation weakens communities and makes them vulnerable to exploitation by external forces. He emphasized the importance of preserving tribal heritage, describing 'vanvasi' (forest dweller) communities as trustees of forests and land, whose consent, participation, and accountability are essential for sustainable development.
Bhagwat issued a stark warning about the consequences of uprooting tribal society, asserting that it would weaken the civilisational foundation of the nation. His remarks aimed to highlight the integral role tribal communities play in maintaining India's cultural and ecological balance, advocating for their inclusion and respect in national discourse.
Congress Criticism and Political Counterarguments
In response to Bhagwat's tribal outreach, Lal Kishore Nath Shahdeo, the state Congress chief spokesperson, launched a pointed critique of the RSS's approach. Shahdeo accused the RSS of consistently attempting to diminish the glorious history of tribals by using the term 'Vanvasi' instead of the constitutional designation 'Adivasi'. He argued that this terminology shift reflects a reluctance to acknowledge tribal identity and rights fully.
Shahdeo called for concrete action over rhetoric, urging the RSS to pressure the Modi government to implement the Sarna Code, a long-pending demand of tribal communities that seeks official recognition for their religious practices. Additionally, he highlighted financial issues, stating that the Centre is withholding Jharkhand's dues of Rs 1.36 lakh crore, which he claims is hindering the development of the state's tribal populations. This financial delay, according to Shahdeo, exacerbates the challenges faced by tribals and contradicts the RSS's professed concerns for their welfare.
The exchange between Bhagwat and Congress representatives underscores the ongoing political and social debates surrounding tribal rights, identity, and development in India. While Bhagwat's speech focused on unity and the spiritual aspects of tribal practices, the Congress response emphasized legal and economic actions, reflecting broader tensions in Indian politics over how best to address tribal issues and integrate these communities into the national framework.
