BJP Leader Takes Firm Stand Against Amritsar Airport Privatisation
In a significant development from Punjab's holy city, former Indian Ambassador to the United States and Bharatiya Janata Party's in-charge for the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has made a categorical statement regarding the future of Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport. During a media interaction at the Amritsar Press Club on Wednesday, Sandhu declared that the reported privatisation of the airport would not be permitted under any circumstances, putting to rest speculation that had been circulating in various quarters.
Focus on Enhancing Cargo Operations for Economic Growth
While addressing journalists, Sandhu provided crucial insights into the current operational status of the airport's cargo facilities. He revealed that although comprehensive cargo infrastructure already exists at the Amritsar airport, only about five percent of its total capacity is currently being utilised. This underutilisation represents a significant economic opportunity that remains untapped.
The BJP leader emphasised the urgent need to dramatically expand cargo operations, highlighting how enhanced cargo facilities would directly benefit regional trade, support local farmers, and boost businesses throughout the area. By maximising the airport's cargo potential, Sandhu believes Amritsar can transform into a major logistics hub that drives economic prosperity across multiple sectors.
Connecting Local Development with International Agreements
Sandhu also connected these local development priorities with broader international frameworks, specifically referencing the recent landmark agreement between India and the European Union. He expressed confidence that this bilateral pact would bring substantial advantages to Indian farmers and ordinary citizens, creating new export opportunities that could be channeled through enhanced airport infrastructure.
"The India-EU agreement opens doors that we must be prepared to walk through," Sandhu suggested, indicating how improved cargo facilities at Amritsar airport could help local producers access European markets more efficiently.
Support for Press Club and Political Context
During a formal interaction following his press address, Sandhu extended his complete support to the various demands raised by the Amritsar Press Club. He assured members that he would make every possible effort to address and fulfil their concerns, demonstrating his commitment to engaging with local institutions and stakeholders.
This development comes with notable political significance, as Sandhu had previously contested and lost the last Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar on a BJP ticket. His current role as the party's in-charge for the constituency positions him as a key figure in shaping BJP's strategy and policy positions for the region ahead of future electoral contests.
The firm stance against airport privatisation reflects both local economic priorities and broader political considerations, as infrastructure development remains a critical issue for voters in the region. Sandhu's dual perspective as both a former diplomat and current political representative adds weight to his statements on matters of international connectivity and local development.
