CM Siddaramaiah Urges Journalists to Uphold Constitutional Values at Karnataka Conference
Siddaramaiah: Journalists Must Introspect on Constitutional Role

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Calls for Journalistic Introspection on Constitutional Values

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of Karnataka has issued a compelling appeal to journalists, urging them to engage in deep introspection regarding their commitment to implementing the foundational values enshrined in the Constitution of India. He delivered this significant address while inaugurating the landmark 40th State Conference of Journalists, a major event organized collaboratively by the Karnataka Working Journalists' Association and the Bidar District Working Journalists' Association in Bidar on Saturday.

Warning Against Speculative and Sensational Journalism

Siddaramaiah expressed grave concern over the proliferation of speculative journalism, describing it as an extremely dangerous practice that poses serious risks to society. He specifically cautioned media professionals against sensationalizing trivial matters, emphasizing the need to carefully consider the far-reaching consequences of such reporting. "How can society possibly benefit if the media chooses to glorify a mere domestic dispute between a couple?" he questioned pointedly, highlighting the media's responsibility to focus on substantive issues that contribute to public welfare.

Historical Legacy and Modern Responsibilities

The Chief Minister drew powerful parallels to historical figures, noting that both Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi served as formidable voices for the voiceless through their journalistic endeavors. He also referenced the Basavadi sharanas, who played a pivotal role in societal construction by systematically identifying and eliminating its shortcomings. Siddaramaiah stressed that contemporary journalism must embody this legacy, transcending the mere provision of information to actively drive meaningful social reforms and progressive change.

Critique of Superstition and Corporate Influence

Expressing disappointment, Siddaramaiah lamented the unfortunate reality where even educated individuals sometimes endorse superstitious beliefs. He advocated strongly for a scientific education system rooted in rationality and called upon journalists to spearhead public awareness campaigns on this critical issue. Furthermore, he addressed the challenges within the media landscape, acknowledging that while many journalists strive to report the truth, numerous media houses operate under significant corporate control. "Although journalists write the truth, editors often succumb to pressure from owners and make alterations," he rued, shedding light on the internal pressures that can compromise editorial integrity.

Affirmation of Media Trust and Government Stance

Despite these criticisms, the Chief Minister affirmed the continued public trust in newspapers, stating that the majority of people still rely on them as credible sources of information. He also made a personal declaration, asserting, "Till date, I have not asked anyone to write in favour of our government," underscoring his administration's commitment to a free and unbiased press.

The prestigious event was graced by several notable dignitaries, including:

  • Bidar District Minister Eshwar Khandre

  • Working Journalists' Association State President Shivananda Tagaduru
