A close aide of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari was shot dead in West Bengal on Tuesday, sparking a fresh political firestorm in the state. The BJP has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating a targeted assassination, while the TMC has denied the allegations and called for a fair investigation.
Incident Details
The deceased, identified as Avijit Sarkar, was a known associate of Adhikari and was actively involved in local party activities. According to police reports, Sarkar was attacked by unidentified assailants in the Haldia area of Purba Medinipur district. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, but initial investigations suggest a possible political rivalry.
BJP's Allegations
Senior BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari himself, have pointed fingers at the TMC, alleging that the murder was a premeditated act of political violence. Adhikari stated, "This is a clear case of targeted assassination by the TMC to silence opposition voices. The state government is responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation." The BJP has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.
TMC's Response
The TMC has vehemently denied the accusations. State Minister and TMC spokesperson, Kunal Ghosh, said, "The BJP is trying to politicize a criminal incident. We have full faith in the state police and their ability to solve the case. The opposition should not jump to conclusions without evidence." The TMC also called for peace and urged all parties to cooperate with the investigation.
Political Tensions Rise
The incident has further escalated tensions between the BJP and TMC, which have been at loggerheads since the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections. The state has witnessed several instances of political violence, with both parties accusing each other of instigating attacks. This latest killing has led to protests and bandhs in parts of the state, with BJP supporters demanding justice.
Call for Peace
While political leaders trade barbs, civil society members have appealed for calm. Peace rallies and candlelight vigils are being organized to condemn the violence. The state government has assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits. However, with the political temperature rising, the coming days are likely to see heightened confrontation between the two parties.
