Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Meets PM Modi, Seeks Action on Mekedatu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday, urging the Centre to take immediate action on two pressing issues: the Mekedatu project and the arrest of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities.

Mekedatu Project Concerns

The Mekedatu project, a drinking water and power generation initiative proposed by Karnataka across the Cauvery River, has been a contentious matter for Tamil Nadu. The state government opposes the project, arguing that it violates the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and would adversely affect Tamil Nadu's water interests. During the meeting, CM Vijay reiterated Tamil Nadu's strong objection to the project and requested the Prime Minister to direct Karnataka to halt all construction activities until a comprehensive review is conducted.

Fishermen Arrests by Sri Lanka

The Chief Minister also raised the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen being arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. He highlighted that such arrests have been a recurring problem, affecting the livelihoods of thousands of fishing families. Vijay urged PM Modi to take up the matter diplomatically with Sri Lanka to ensure the release of the arrested fishermen and their fishing boats, and to prevent future incidents. He emphasized the need for a permanent solution to protect the rights of Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay region.
