The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leadership is actively considering significant cost-cutting measures for its annual conclave, Mahanadu, as part of broader austerity initiatives in the state. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to reduce avoidable expenditure and promote financial discipline.
Background of Mahanadu
Mahanadu is the most important organizational event for the TDP, held every year. This year's conclave, scheduled from May 27 for three days, holds added political significance as it will be the first Mahanadu after Nara Lokesh was elevated as the party's working president. Traditionally, the event features lavish arrangements, including extensive hospitality and elaborate food offerings.
Austerity Measures Under Discussion
Party leaders have confirmed that discussions are underway to scale down the traditionally extravagant arrangements. The push for austerity appears to have triggered a rethink within the leadership, especially after concerns were raised internally about the scale of expenditure. A senior TDP leader noted that during recent organizing committee meetings hosted by Rajya Sabha MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy and his wife, MLA Prasanthi Reddy, nine to ten varieties of non-vegetarian dishes and several ice-cream varieties were served. The leader suggested adopting a simpler approach for Mahanadu as well.
Local legislator and chief host Prasanthi Reddy is reportedly making an all-out attempt to woo the party leadership with extravagant arrangements. Sources indicate that the Vemireddy couple has expressed willingness to shoulder the entire financial burden of Mahanadu, including venues, roads, pandals, air-conditioners, accommodation for VIPs, food, and cultural events. Despite this, the party leadership is exploring meaningful and visible austerity measures that align with Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu's message while ensuring the event retains its political significance and organizational strength.
Potential Cancellation of Public Meeting
The TDP is also considering calling off the public meeting planned for the final day of Mahanadu on May 29. A 500-acre site near the IFFCO Kisan SEZ at Kovur has been readied for the event. TDP state president Palla Srinivas Rao confirmed that an internal debate is ongoing. "There is an internal debate on whether to call off the final day public meeting in response to the Prime Minister's appeal. As a ruling party and an NDA ally, we share responsibility for supporting austerity measures. A final decision will be taken after consultations with the chief minister and national working president Nara Lokesh," he said.
Logistical Challenges
Given the soaring summer temperatures across the state, organizers are expected to deploy a large number of air-conditioners and cooling systems at the venue. Local public representatives have already blocked numerous hotel rooms and private accommodation facilities for leaders and delegates expected from across the state. Leaders estimate that nearly six to eight lakh people may participate in this year's meeting.
Cultural Significance
Mahanadu has earned a reputation over the years for its extravagant hospitality and elaborate food arrangements. Delegates are typically served dozens of food varieties, particularly non-vegetarian dishes, specially made sweets, and ice-creams, making the conclave as much a cultural event as a political gathering. The party leadership is now said to be exploring ways to cut costs without diminishing the event's importance.
A former minister suggested that costs could be reduced by avoiding frequent visits to the venue by all leaders. "We have to devise a way out," he said. The party has already constituted several committees to supervise the arrangements, many of whom have reached Nellore.
