Telangana Chief Minister Appeals for Enhanced Security Infrastructure
In a significant development aimed at bolstering law enforcement capabilities, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy held a crucial meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Wednesday. During this high-level discussion, the Chief Minister formally requested an augmentation of the Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre strength in the state to address evolving security and administrative challenges.
Request for Increased IPS Allocation
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy urged the Union Home Minister to elevate the sanctioned strength of IPS officers in Telangana from the current 83 to 105. This appeal is grounded in the state's growing administrative demands and the need to combat modern security threats effectively. The Chief Minister emphasized that the first cadre review post-Telangana's formation occurred in 2016, with the subsequent review, due in 2021, experiencing delays and only being finalized in 2025. Notably, this delayed review resulted in the allocation of merely seven additional IPS officers, which Revanth Reddy argued is insufficient given the state's rapid development and population growth.
Addressing Modern Security Challenges
Revanth Reddy outlined several pressing issues necessitating the enhanced police presence. He highlighted the rise of cybercrime, drug trafficking, white-collar crimes, and other emerging security threats that Telangana, like the rest of India, is confronting. Additionally, the administrative reorganization of key police commissionerates—Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri—along with the proposed Future City Commissionerate and Hyderabad's expanding population, were cited as factors driving the need for more IPS officers. To ensure timely adjustments, the Chief Minister also requested that the third cadre review be conducted as scheduled in 2026, avoiding further postponements.
Seeking Central Financial Support
Beyond security concerns, the meeting also focused on developmental initiatives. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy appealed for financial assistance from the central government to support development works in Telangana's backward regions. This request underscores the state's commitment to balanced growth and infrastructure improvement, seeking collaboration with the Centre to uplift underdeveloped areas.
Key Officials Present
The meeting was attended by several senior officials from Telangana, including Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister V Seshadri, Director General of Police B Shivdhar Reddy, Intelligence Additional DGP Vijay Kumar, and SIB IGP B Sumathi. Their presence highlighted the importance of the discussions and the state's unified approach in advocating for these critical resources.
This proactive engagement by the Telangana government reflects a strategic effort to strengthen governance and security frameworks, aligning with the state's dynamic growth trajectory and the complex challenges of contemporary law enforcement.
