Trinamool Congress Defends Progressive Rajya Sabha Candidates Amid BJP Criticism

In a significant political development, the Trinamool Congress on Saturday staunchly defended its list of Rajya Sabha candidates, describing it as "progressive" and packed with successful professionals who will champion Bengal's and the party's cause in Parliament. The announcement has sparked both praise and controversy, with the BJP criticizing the inclusion of individuals not native to Bengal.

Trinamool's Defense of Professional Expertise

Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh addressed reporters, highlighting the credentials of the nominees. "From Rajeev Kumar and Menaka Guruswamy to Koel Mullick and Babul Supriyo — everyone is a successful professional with depth of knowledge and experience," Ghosh asserted. He emphasized that the selection prioritizes expertise over regional origins, a point that has drawn fire from the BJP.

In response to BJP criticism that Kumar and Guruswamy are outsiders to Bengal, Ghosh drew historical parallels. "From CPM's Brinda Karat to Manmohan Singh, and multiple BJP MPs, many went to the Rajya Sabha from states that were not their home states," he noted. Ghosh further explained, "Kumar has spent his work life in Bengal. Not everything should be seen through the prism of controversy. His expertise and knowledge should be considered." He added similar praise for Guruswamy, calling her "an extremely competent professional and a very progressive individual."

Political Counterattacks and Historical Context

Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim joined the defense, urging the BJP not to "target" Kumar. "Once his responsibilities are over, he can take up any work he chooses," Hakim stated. He pointed out that many government officers have previously become BJP candidates, but criticized a recent move by the BJP. "But for a judge to resign and immediately become a candidate — that's an injustice, a sin," Hakim said, in an apparent reference to BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay.

Historic Nomination for LGBTQ+ Representation

A key highlight of the list is the nomination of senior Supreme Court advocate Menaka Guruswamy, which Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra hailed as a "huge step forward for the LGBTQ+ movement in India." Moitra noted that Guruswamy will become the first queer woman in India's Parliament, marking a pathbreaking moment for representation and inclusivity in the country's legislative body.

Widespread Praise for Mamata Banerjee's Decision

Public figures across party lines have lauded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to nominate Guruswamy. Former governor Margaret Alva wrote on social media, "Trinamool's Rajya Sabha candidate, Menaka Guruswamy, is an inspired choice. Menaka is an excellent lawyer and a role model for young women and men all across our country." She added that Banerjee consistently surprises with her candidate selections.

Historian S Irfan Habib and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi also extended congratulations. Habib wrote, "Congratulations Menaka Guruswamy for the honour. Strong voices like yours need to be in Parliament." Singhvi, who has worked with both Kumar and Guruswamy, praised the nominees, stating, "I consistently and continuously represented Rajeev Kumar, ex-DGP, in court over the last several years. Menaka Guruswamy worked with me on diverse court battles and is a valued colleague at the bar."

Upcoming Rajya Sabha Elections and Political Dynamics

Rajya Sabha elections for multiple states, including Bengal, are scheduled for March 16. With numbers firmly stacked in its favor in the 294-member assembly, Trinamool is set to win four out of the five Rajya Sabha seats, while the BJP is expected to secure one. This electoral advantage underscores the party's strategic positioning in state politics.

In a related note, Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Saket Gokhale, who is due to retire on April 2 and is not being renominated, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and Abhishek Banerjee for the opportunity given to him two-and-a-half years ago, stating he looks forward to continuing his service to the party.

The Trinamool Congress's candidate list reflects a blend of professional acumen and progressive values, setting the stage for a robust parliamentary presence as the party prepares for the upcoming elections amidst a backdrop of political scrutiny and acclaim.
