Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai on Tuesday claimed he was placed under "house arrest" in Ayodhya and prevented from visiting the newly inaugurated Ram temple. Rai, who arrived in the temple town with a party delegation, said he would not leave until allowed to offer prayers.
Delegation Stopped at Hotel
Rai alleged that police and administrative officials blocked the Congress delegation from moving beyond their hotel. "We were not allowed to step out. This is a violation of our fundamental rights," he told reporters. The delegation had planned to visit the Ram temple as part of a political outreach.
The Congress leader said the party had sought permission for the visit but was denied. "We are peaceful citizens. There is no reason to stop us," he added.
Political Reactions
The incident has sparked a political row, with the Congress accusing the BJP-led state government of using administrative machinery to stifle opposition. State Congress spokesperson said, "This shows the government's insecurity. They cannot tolerate opposition leaders visiting the temple."
The BJP, however, dismissed the claims. Ayodhya district magistrate said, "No one has been placed under house arrest. The delegation was advised to follow protocol and schedule their visit appropriately."
Background
The Ram temple in Ayodhya was inaugurated in January 2024, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing the consecration ceremony. Since then, it has become a major political and religious site. Opposition leaders have visited the temple, though some have faced logistical issues.
Rai's standoff underscores ongoing tensions between the Congress and the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, where the ruling party has maintained a strong grip on power. The Congress has been struggling to regain relevance in the state.
