Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides, Disrupts Connectivity Across Uttarakhand

Incessant heavy rain has wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand, leading to the closure of 120 roads, including three national highways. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 100 pilgrims stranded on the Yamunotri route after a massive landslide washed away nearly 100 metres of road at Syanachatti in Uttarkashi district on Thursday.

The SDRF reported that a huge accumulation of debris completely blocked the highway at Syanachatti following relentless rainfall. The landslide not only buried the road but also swept away a significant stretch, leaving pilgrims trapped. Rescue operations were launched immediately, and all 100 pilgrims were safely evacuated. According to SDRF officials, no casualties have been reported so far.

120 Roads Closed Across the State

The state emergency operations centre confirmed that 120 roads are shut due to landslides, debris, and waterlogging. This includes three national highways critical for connectivity to remote areas. The Char Dham pilgrimage routes have been severely affected, with several stretches blocked. Authorities have advised pilgrims to postpone travel until weather conditions improve.

The worst-hit area is Syanachatti in Uttarkashi, where the continuous downpour triggered a landslide that destroyed a 100-metre section of the highway. The SDRF team worked through the night to clear debris and create a temporary path for rescue vehicles. Officials stated that restoring the road will take several days due to the extent of damage.

Impact on Pilgrimage and Local Communities

The heavy rain has disrupted the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, with thousands of pilgrims stranded at various points. The state government has set up relief camps and is providing food and shelter to affected individuals. Local communities in landslide-prone areas have been advised to stay indoors. The meteorological department has warned of more heavy rain in the coming days, raising concerns about further damage.
