In a significant political development, SA Chandrasekhar, the father of prominent actor-politician Vijay, has publicly appealed to the Indian National Congress to form an electoral alliance with his son's political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Chandrasekhar asserted that such a partnership could potentially help the grand old party reclaim its historical prominence and "old glory" within the state's political landscape.
Congress Firmly Rejects Informal Alliance Proposal
However, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has promptly and decisively rejected this informal overture. TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai responded to Chandrasekhar's comments by stating that the Congress party does not require any external "boost" to strengthen its position in Tamil Nadu.
Chandrasekhar's Vision for Congress Revival
According to reports from news agency PTI, Chandrasekhar elaborated on his proposal, indicating that TVK was actively considering extending support to the Congress in the forthcoming election. He emphasized the Congress party's rich history and legacy in Indian politics, suggesting that Vijay's backing could serve as a catalyst for its resurgence.
"Congress has a history and a legacy ... Vijay is ready to give them support and get them back to their old glory," Chandrasekhar stated. He further criticized the Congress for consistently supporting other political entities over the years, which he believes has gradually diminished its relevance in Tamil Nadu's dynamic political arena.
Chandrasekhar reiterated, "They (Congress) have been extending support to other parties and are on the wane. Vijay is ready to support them and help them regain their old glory." He also mentioned that numerous advisors have encouraged Vijay to contest the assembly elections independently, confident in the actor's strong prospects even without forming any alliances.
Vijay's Political Positioning and Ambitions
Vijay, who established TVK as a formidable political force, has recently intensified his public outreach campaigns. During these programs, he has launched sharp criticisms against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), identifying it as TVK's primary political rival. He has also targeted the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), labeling it as corrupt, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which he describes as his ideological adversary.
Vijay has consistently maintained that TVK is poised to assume power and fundamentally alter Tamil Nadu's development trajectory. His vision for the state emphasizes comprehensive transformation and progress under his leadership.
Congress Leadership's Dismissive Response
Reacting to Chandrasekhar's alliance proposal, TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai addressed reporters in Arakkonam, dismissing the need for external support. "Look at our cadres, you will notice that they have had the boost already," he remarked confidently.
Selvaperunthagai further elaborated, "Our leader Rahul Gandhi is giving us boost, Horlicks and Bournvita that we need. Nevertheless, I thank him for the offer." This metaphorical response underscores the Congress's belief in its internal strength and leadership-driven revival.
Official Stance from Vijay and TVK
It is important to note that the alliance offer has not been formally extended by Vijay or the TVK leadership. At a recent TVK gathering in Mahabalipuram, Vijay expressed confidence in his party's independent capabilities, suggesting that TVK possesses sufficient strength to secure power on its own merit.
Vijay also addressed widespread speculation regarding potential political alliances, reframing the upcoming election as a "democratic war." He stated, "There’s a lot of speculation about alliances ... It is not a mere election but a democratic war. You (people) are my commandos who will fight this war." This rhetoric highlights his strategic approach to mobilizing public support and positioning TVK as a self-reliant political entity.
The political dynamics in Tamil Nadu continue to evolve as parties strategize for the assembly elections. While Chandrasekhar's proposal introduces a potential realignment, the Congress's rejection and Vijay's independent stance indicate a complex and competitive electoral landscape ahead.
