AMC Enforces Strict Waste Segregation Rules in Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced a strict enforcement of waste segregation norms across the city, aligning with the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, following directives from the Supreme Court of India.

Mandatory Four-Way Segregation

Under the new regulations, all residential societies and commercial establishments in Ahmedabad must segregate waste into four distinct categories before handing it over to door-to-door garbage collection vehicles. The four categories include wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste, and hazardous household waste.

Wet waste (green bin) encompasses kitchen refuse, fruit peels, and vegetable scraps. Dry waste (blue bin) includes paper, plastic, glass, and metal items. Sanitary waste (red bin) covers used diapers, sanitary pads, shaving blades, and sharp objects, which must be securely wrapped before disposal. Hazardous household waste (yellow bin), classified as "special care waste," comprises expired medicines, pesticide containers, garden chemicals, and other chemical substances.

Implementation and Compliance

AMC officials have stated that every residential society and commercial unit must maintain four separate bins for the collection of segregated waste. The civic body generates approximately 3,000 to 3,200 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. Under the new provisions, dumping garbage on streets, in open spaces, drains, or water bodies, as well as burning or burying waste, will be treated as an offence.

The AMC has warned that failure to comply with the four-way segregation norms or negligence in implementation could invite strict punitive action under the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 and other environmental laws. Non-compliance may amount to contempt of the Supreme Court’s directions, the corporation added.

Awareness and Enforcement

An AMC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “This has been done following the Supreme Court’s order. This waste must be provided to door-to-door collection vehicles. Four types of dustbins must be placed outside the society, from where the waste will be collected by door-to-door waste collection vehicles. Awareness programmes will be conducted regarding this.”

The AMC is expected to launch widespread awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the new segregation rules and the importance of compliance. Penalties for violations will be enforced to ensure adherence to the Supreme Court’s directives and environmental regulations.
