Ranchi: An auto-rickshaw carrying over 10 schoolchildren overturned on Harmu Road on Wednesday. No major injuries were reported, and all the children were stated to be safe. The incident brought back the spotlight on the issue of overloading in autos and e-rickshaws used to transport children.
Inquiry Ordered
District transport officer (DTO) Akhilesh Kumar said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. “We will ascertain the circumstances under which the accident occurred and whether any safety norms were violated,” he said.
Wake-Up Call for Authorities
The Jharkhand Parents Teachers Association (JPTA) said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for authorities and parents alike. Ajay Rai, president of JPTA, said the association had repeatedly flagged the issue with district administrations.
“Even before this incident, we had written to DCs and DTOs seeking stricter enforcement of norms related to school transport. We should not wait for such incidents to occur before taking action. Parents also have a responsibility to ensure their children are travelling safely to school. Overloading has been a long-standing issue and needs sustained monitoring,” he said.
