The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will launch the 'Safe Footpath Campaign' starting July 1, 2026, targeting encroachments on footpaths across the city. Shop owners and commercial establishments have been asked to voluntarily remove all obstructions from footpaths by the deadline.
Campaign Objectives and Timeline
According to a BBMP official, the campaign aims to reclaim pedestrian spaces and ensure safe walkways for citizens. The civic body has set a voluntary compliance period until June 30, after which enforcement actions will begin. The initiative covers all major roads and commercial areas in Bengaluru.
Appeal to Shop Owners
BBMP has issued a public notice urging shopkeepers to clear goods, display boards, and other items from footpaths. "We request all commercial establishments to cooperate and remove encroachments voluntarily to avoid penal action," the official said. The campaign will be monitored by zonal officers.
Impact on Pedestrians
Footpath encroachments have long been a problem in Bengaluru, forcing pedestrians onto roads and increasing accident risks. The campaign is expected to benefit over 1 million daily walkers. BBMP plans to conduct regular inspections and impose fines on violators after the deadline.
