For decades, commuters at the Pump House bus stop near Jayanagar 9th Block in Bengaluru relied on a familiar bus shelter to escape the scorching sun and sudden rains. However, over the past three months, residents say the shelter has mysteriously vanished, leaving daily bus users, including senior citizens and students, waiting in the open.
Location and Impact
Located near Jayanagar 9th Block, the Pump House bus stop serves as an important transit point for residents traveling to and from nearby localities, especially Jayanagar 4th Block. According to locals, the shelter stood for several years before disappearing abruptly, seemingly overnight. While the exact timeline of its removal remains unclear, locals estimate that it has been missing for over three months.
A recent reality check by TOI found that the bus shelter was located directly in front of a row of commercial establishments, including a bakery, a juice shop, and a stationery store. An educational institution nearby also contributes to steady footfall at the bus stop. During visits to the location, commuters could be seen waiting under the harsh afternoon sun with no shade or seating.
Commuters' Plight
A tender coconut vendor operating opposite the bus stop said the shelter's disappearance came as a surprise. "One morning when I came to open my shop, I noticed it had disappeared. Someone must have removed it during the night. If authorities were removing it officially, why would it happen overnight? Many people, especially during summer, are struggling without shade," he said.
Senior citizens, among the regular users of the bus stop, said the missing shelter has made commuting difficult. One elderly resident, KV Chandrasekhar, said he reached out to both civic authorities and police but received no clear response. "This is an important stop for those going towards Jayanagar 4th Block. We are forced to stand while waiting for buses. I can't even bring my wife here because standing for long becomes difficult. The summer is already harsh, and soon the rains will begin. We request the authorities to restore the shelter at the earliest," he said.
Another commuter, Shivanand M, who uses the stop daily, said: "It feels like the shelter was removed for someone's benefit. Even if it cannot come back at the same place, authorities should install one within 5-10 metres because commuters really need it."
Official Response
When contacted, an engineer from Bengaluru South City Corporation (BSCC) acknowledged that the matter has come to the civic body's attention and indicated that private property concerns may have played a role. "We install many of these bus shelters under the PPP model. We were informed by the agency maintaining the shelter that the private property owners behind the stop wanted it removed as they felt it blocked visibility of their businesses and affected commercial activity," the engineer said.
The official added that the agency reported damage to parts of the structure, following which it was removed. "This was not brought to our notice properly. We will look into the matter, take appropriate action, and ensure that a new bus shelter is installed near the same area at the earliest," the engineer added.
Conflicting Views
However, a staffer at the bakery disputed claims that local businesses had pushed for the shelter's removal. "I think it was removed to make way for an LED bus stop; the same agency that installed it took it away," he said.
With monsoon approaching and temperatures continuing to soar, residents are now hoping civic authorities move quickly to restore basic commuter infrastructure at one of Jayanagar's long-standing bus stops.
