Jailed Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, widely known as Engineer Rashid, returned to Tihar Jail on June 30, 2026, following the conclusion of his interim bail. He was granted temporary release by the Delhi High Court to attend the 40th-day mourning rituals after the death of his father.
Interim Bail Details
The Delhi High Court had allowed Engineer Rashid to be released on interim bail for a limited period to participate in the religious ceremonies. According to court documents, the bail was granted specifically for the mourning period, and he was required to surrender immediately after its completion.
Engineer Rashid, who represents the Baramulla constituency in the Lok Sabha, has been in judicial custody since August 2023 in connection with a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). He was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for alleged involvement in terror funding activities.
Return to Custody
On the evening of June 30, Engineer Rashid surrendered before the jail authorities at Tihar, marking the end of his brief period outside prison. His legal team confirmed that he complied with all bail conditions and returned on time. “He has always respected the court's orders and will continue to fight his case from within the jail,” a lawyer representing him stated.
The NIA had opposed the grant of bail, arguing that the allegations against him are serious and that he could influence witnesses if released. However, the court allowed the interim bail on humanitarian grounds, noting the death of his father earlier in June.
Political Reactions
The return of Engineer Rashid to Tihar Jail has drawn reactions from political circles in Jammu and Kashmir. Several leaders from the Awami Itihaad Party, which Rashid leads, expressed disappointment over his continued incarceration. “His absence from Parliament has been a loss for the people of Baramulla. We hope for a speedy trial and his eventual release,” said a party spokesperson.
Meanwhile, supporters gathered outside the jail briefly, but were dispersed by security personnel. The authorities maintained tight security during his surrender to avoid any untoward incidents.
Legal Status
Engineer Rashid remains in judicial custody pending trial. His next court hearing is scheduled for July 15, 2026, when the NIA is expected to present additional evidence. The case has been pending for over three years, with the prosecution citing over 200 witnesses and extensive electronic evidence.
The Delhi High Court has previously denied regular bail to Rashid, citing the gravity of the charges. However, the Supreme Court is yet to hear a special leave petition filed by his legal team challenging the denial of regular bail.
