Residents of Kesharpur Chowk in Cuttack are facing severe hardships due to the indiscriminate dumping of garbage along the box drain road. The accumulated waste, including plastic, rotten vegetables, household garbage, and construction debris, has created an unbearable stench and unhygienic conditions in the area, making commuting difficult and life miserable for locals.
Repeated Complaints Ignored
Despite multiple complaints to the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), sanitation workers continue to dump garbage in the area, leading to the pile-up of waste. Stray animals feeding on the garbage have further littered the road, causing inconvenience to both pedestrians and motorists. Mohammed Ayub, a resident of Kesharpur, stated, "The entire stretch has become a mini dumping yard. It is impossible to walk due to the foul smell and filth."
Box Drain Purpose Defeated
The box drain was constructed to ensure free movement and congestion-free traffic, but its purpose remains unfulfilled. Ranjan Behera, another resident, highlighted that mosquitoes and flies have increased drastically, with children and elderly people being the worst sufferers. Shopkeeper Sushant Nayak added that sanitation vehicles frequently unload waste near the drain instead of transporting it to designated dumping points. "The waste remains unattended for days. Customers avoid coming to this area because of the unhygienic atmosphere," he said. Nayak also alleged that clogged drains and scattered garbage often lead to waterlogging during the monsoon, worsening traffic congestion in the busy locality.
CMC Mayor Assures Action
When contacted, CMC Mayor Subhash Singh stated, "I have directed officials to inspect the spot and ensure regular lifting of garbage. Strict action will be taken if any sanitation worker is found dumping waste irresponsibly." Residents hope that the authorities will take immediate steps to resolve the issue and restore cleanliness in the area.
