Special GBA team to flag illegal structures in Chickpet, conduct fire audit
GBA special team for Chickpet illegal structures fire audit

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has formed a special team to identify illegal structures in the Chickpet area and conduct a comprehensive fire audit. GBA Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao issued the directive on Tuesday, instructing officials to assemble a dedicated squad of town planners to undertake the survey.

Survey to cover entire Chickpet area

The special team will systematically inspect all buildings in Chickpet, a densely populated commercial hub in Bengaluru. The survey aims to flag unauthorized constructions and assess fire safety measures. Rao emphasized the need for a thorough and time-bound exercise to address potential hazards.

Focus on fire safety compliance

In addition to identifying illegal structures, the team will conduct a fire audit to ensure buildings adhere to safety norms. This move comes after recent fire incidents in the city highlighted gaps in enforcement. The GBA plans to take strict action against violators, including demolition of unauthorized portions and imposition of fines.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and the integrity of urban planning,” Rao said in a statement. The audit will cover both residential and commercial properties, with priority given to high-risk areas like narrow lanes and old buildings.

Timeline and next steps

The GBA has set a deadline of two weeks for the initial survey. Officials will then compile a report detailing violations and recommend remedial measures. Property owners will be notified and given a chance to rectify issues before punitive actions are taken. The initiative is part of a broader city-wide crackdown on illegal constructions.
