Panaji: The Goa State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday increased the number of wards for 11 municipal councils that are likely to go to the polls. The new ward allocations range from 10 to 27, depending on the classification of each municipal council.
New Ward Distribution
With the notification, the Mormugao Municipal Council will have 27 wards, Margao 27, Mapusa 20, Curchorem-Cacora 17, Bicholim 15, Cuncolim 15, Quepem 14, Canacona 13, and Valpoi, Pernem and Sanguem 10 wards each.
The Times of India had earlier reported that the SEC was likely to finalize new wards for the 11 municipal councils based on population within the municipal council areas, rather than on the number of electorates. Previously, SEC wards were created based on the number of electorates in the municipal areas.
Delimitation Process Overhauled
Last week, the SEC cancelled the existing delimitation of wards to restart the process afresh after notifying the new wards. SEC commissioner Menino D’Souza stated: “On the basis of the Goa Municipalities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 (Ordinance No. 4 of 2026), the delimitation process already carried out has become infructuous and the entire process of delimitation carried out is declared null and void.”
Following the carving out of new wards, the SEC will undertake delimitation, followed by reservation and the announcement of elections for the municipal councils.
