The Chamba police arrested a 27-year-old man with 7.87 grams of 'chitta' (heroin) on Tuesday night during a checkpoint operation on the Chamba-Jot Road. The arrest was part of an intensified anti-drug campaign by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
Checkpoint Operation Leads to Seizure
According to a press statement from the police, the SIU team set up a 'naka' (checkpoint) on the Chamba-Jot Road as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking. At the checkpoint, the police intercepted a motorcycle traveling from the Jot side towards Chamba. The rider, identified as Sawan Jariyal, a resident of Gholti village in the Sarol area, was stopped for questioning. During a search, the police recovered 7.87 grams of 'chitta' from his possession.
Accused in Custody, Case Registered
Following the recovery, the accused was taken into custody. A case under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered at Sadar Police Station, Chamba. The police have launched an investigation to determine the source of the contraband and to examine whether the accused is linked to a larger drug network.
Police Probe Drug Network Links
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani stated that the police are probing the source of the contraband and are examining any connections the accused may have to a larger drug network. The arrest is part of a broader anti-drug campaign in the region aimed at curbing the supply of narcotics.
