Madurai School Sewage Channel Blocked, Health Risk

An open sewage channel running near the walls of Ananth Memorial Matriculation Hr Sec School in Arapalayam, Madurai, has been blocked with plastic waste, causing a terrible stench and posing a health risk for students and residents.

Blocked Channel Near Bus Stand

Located near Arapalayam bus stand, the sewage channel has been blocked primarily by single-use plastic bottles and other waste, blocking sewage flow. Residents said the channel has not been cleaned for almost two months. “Most of the channels in the city, including this one, need to be properly cleaned and desilted,” said Thangadurai, a resident of the area.

Health Risks for Students

A school employee said sewage from the channel creates a terrible odour. “The stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. As the channel is open without any protection, we constantly have to caution children against falling in or playing near the channel,” the employee said.

PWD Response

A public works department (PWD) official said the channel will be cleared of waste soon. “We will set up barricades to prevent people from going near the channel and discourage waste dumping,” the official said, adding that CCTV cameras will also be placed to monitor illegal waste dumping into the channel.
