The opposition parties in Kapurthala have flagged significant concerns regarding the safety and security of ballot boxes in the district ahead of the upcoming elections. Alleging potential tampering and lack of adequate surveillance, they have demanded immediate intervention from the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polling.
Opposition Alleges Lapses in Security Arrangements
Leaders from various opposition groups held a press conference on Wednesday, highlighting what they described as glaring lapses in the security arrangements for ballot boxes. They claimed that several strong rooms where ballot boxes are stored lack proper CCTV coverage and round-the-clock monitoring. "The safety of ballot boxes is the cornerstone of democratic elections. Any compromise in this area can lead to widespread distrust among voters," said a senior opposition leader.
Demand for Enhanced Measures
The opposition has submitted a memorandum to the District Election Officer, urging the deployment of additional security personnel and installation of high-resolution cameras at all storage locations. They also called for surprise inspections by election officials to verify compliance. "We want a transparent process where every citizen can have confidence that their vote is safe," another leader added.
Government Response
Responding to the allegations, district administration officials assured that all necessary protocols are being followed. They stated that ballot boxes are kept under strict surveillance with armed guards and that any concerns raised by political parties would be addressed promptly. "We are committed to conducting a free and fair election. Security measures are being reviewed continuously," a spokesperson said.
Historical Context
This is not the first time that ballot box security has become a contentious issue in the region. During previous elections, similar allegations were made, leading to increased vigilance. Political analysts believe that the current row could intensify as polling day approaches, with parties using it to mobilize their supporters.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has taken note of the opposition's concerns and is expected to issue fresh guidelines to ensure the integrity of the electoral process in Kapurthala.
