Pune Police: Prohibitory Orders Routine Before Festivals

Pune Police Commissioner Clarifies Prohibitory Orders

Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated on Tuesday that the prohibitory orders issued on May 23, which restrict large gatherings by political parties, social organizations, and others until June 8, are a routine measure to maintain law and order ahead of festivals and events. He emphasized that similar orders have been enforced previously, including before elections.

"These restrictions are imposed every fortnight, especially ahead of festivals and other major events, to maintain law and order in the city. Similar orders have been in place for several years and are not meant for a particular festival. Hence, the orders should be taken in the right spirit," Kumar said.

Details of the Orders

The Special Branch of the Pune police issued the orders, effective from Tuesday midnight, urging citizens to maintain peace during upcoming festivals, including Bakrid. The orders were issued by deputy commissioner of police (Special Branch) Prashant Amrutkar. They prohibit carrying stones, sharp weapons, inflammable materials, and sticks in public places. Activities such as burning effigies and raising slogans are also banned.

Earlier, on March 14, the Special Branch issued similar prohibitory orders to maintain peace during festivals like Gudi Padwa, Ramzan Eid, and Ram Navami. On January 30, similar curbs were announced to ensure tranquillity during the 2026 zilla parishad and panchayat samiti elections.

The police commissioner reiterated that these measures are standard procedure and not targeted at any specific community or event. He urged citizens to cooperate and understand the necessity of such orders for public safety.
