The Municipal Committee (MC) of Radaur demolished approximately 80 temporary encroachments on municipal land in Deha Basti, part of Chhota Bans Colony in Yamunanagar district, on Saturday. The drive targeted illegal huts, unauthorised structures, and boundary walls erected on public land.
Drive Conducted Under Official Supervision
The demolition was supervised by Municipal Engineer Sandeep Sharma and Sanitary Inspector Sumit Bains. Ashu Kamboj, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of the Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, was appointed duty magistrate by Deputy Commissioner Preeti. A heavy police force, led by Station House Officer Rajesh Rana of Radaur police station, was deployed to prevent any disruption.
According to officials, the MC team used earth-moving machines to clear the encroachments. Some residents attempted to protest, but the police presence ensured the operation proceeded without interruption.
Prior Notices Issued to Encroachers
Sharma stated that those involved in the encroachments had been served notices several months ago, asking them to remove the structures voluntarily. However, they failed to comply, prompting the demolition drive.
Municipal Committee workers removed household items—including refrigerators, coolers, washing machines, cots, and cylinders—from the huts and loaded them onto municipal trolleys. The items were later confiscated and transported to the MC office.
Background of Deha Basti
Deha Basti was previously part of the gram panchayat of Radauri village but now falls under the Municipal Committee, Radaur, which was granted municipal committee status in 2016. A local social worker alleged that neither the gram panchayat nor the MC had taken timely action against residents who had been occupying MC land illegally for decades. The situation had worsened, with a large area of municipal land encroached upon.
Local municipal councillors, led by Municipal Committee Chairman Rajneesh Mehta Shalu, met the Radaur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and submitted a memorandum seeking action against the encroachers.
