Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has set up 11 quick response teams (QRTs) and operates 11 de-silting pumps to remove waterlogging in the state capital during the monsoon season. The civic body has identified 108 spots across the city that are prone to waterlogging in a survey that was carried out recently. Separate short-term and long-term action plans have been prepared for each site to ensure rapid response and sustainable solutions.
The survey said inadequate drainage infrastructure, insufficient carrying capacity of existing drains, silt accumulation, dumping of plastic waste, lack of drainage outlets and obstructions such as utility poles and pipelines lead to waterlogging in the state capital. Wards 15, 18, 19, 22, 28, 32, 48 and 49 were categorised as highly sensitive due to recurring waterlogging. These wards will receive special monitoring and priority intervention during heavy rain. Nearly 70% of the identified waterlogging points require long-term measures such as the construction of new drains, widening and deepening of existing channels, RMC officials said.
Mayor Roshani Khalkho, while distributing safety kits and equipment to QRT personnel on Monday, said, “RMC is prepared to deal with waterlogging this year. Our QRTs will immediately reach affected locations and ensure prompt drainage to provide relief to residents.” Khalkho said, “The teams will also remove fallen trees, branches and other obstructions from roads to restore traffic movement and public safety during the monsoon.” Each QRT has been equipped with safety gear, communication devices and other technical equipment. The teams will undertake drain cleaning, operate de-silting pumps, deploy super sucker machines and create temporary drainage channels whenever required.
However, some residents remain cautious. Kamal Khan, a resident of Hindpiri, said, “Every year we hear about preparations, but several localities become submerged after a few hours of rain. The real test will be how quickly teams respond when heavy showers begin.” Citizens can report waterlogging or emergencies through RMC’s toll-free helpline 1800-570-1235 or WhatsApp number 9431104429.
