The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has decided to hold talks with the Karnataka Forest Department to resolve the ongoing dispute over the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary. The decision comes after several complaints regarding alleged encroachments and illegal activities within the sanctuary.
Background of the Dispute
The Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Shivamogga district, has been a subject of contention between local communities and the forest department. Residents claim that certain areas of the sanctuary are being used for unauthorized purposes, leading to environmental degradation.
CEC's Intervention
The CEC, a body appointed by the Supreme Court, will mediate between the stakeholders to ensure the protection of the sanctuary's ecosystem. The talks are expected to address issues such as boundary demarcation, removal of encroachments, and sustainable livelihood options for local tribes.
Forest department officials have welcomed the CEC's initiative and assured full cooperation. They stated that a detailed survey of the sanctuary would be conducted to identify violations.
Environmental activists have urged the CEC to prioritize the conservation of the sanctuary, which is home to several endangered species. They emphasized the need for strict implementation of wildlife protection laws.
The outcome of the talks is likely to set a precedent for resolving similar disputes in other protected areas across Karnataka.
