The Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation (MC) has initiated a large-scale anti-encroachment drive targeting roadside illegal structures across the city. The operation aims to clear public land occupied by unauthorized shops, stalls, and temporary constructions that have been hindering traffic flow and pedestrian movement.
Drive Details and Execution
The MC team, accompanied by police personnel, began the drive early in the morning from the bus stand area and proceeded through major marketplaces. Using bulldozers and JCB machines, officials demolished several makeshift shops and extensions that had encroached upon footpaths and road edges. The drive is part of a broader initiative to restore order in the city's congested zones.
Officials' Statements
Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Kumar stated that the drive will continue until all major encroachments are removed. He emphasized that no leniency would be shown to violators, and repeated offenders would face legal action. The MC has also issued warnings to property owners who have allowed encroachments on their land.
Public Reaction
Local residents and commuters have largely welcomed the move, citing reduced traffic jams and improved walkability. However, some shopkeepers expressed concern over sudden demolition without prior notice, though officials claimed that notices were issued earlier. The MC has assured that alternative arrangements will be made for those affected, in accordance with municipal guidelines.
Future Plans
The corporation plans to conduct regular inspections to prevent re-encroachment. Additionally, a helpline number has been set up for citizens to report any new illegal constructions. The drive is expected to be completed within a week, covering all 20 wards of the city.
This crackdown aligns with the state government's directive to clear all urban local bodies of unauthorized structures. Similar drives are likely in other cities of Haryana in the coming months.
