In a significant push for agricultural infrastructure, the Punjab government has initiated a major canal lining project aimed at transforming irrigation for farmers in the Dirba assembly constituency. The move will bring more than 400 acres of farmland under the reliable supply of canal water, marking a step forward in the state's mission to ensure canal water reaches every field.
Minister Inaugurates Crucial Infrastructure Work
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema officially inaugurated the canal lining work on Thursday in Dharmgarh village, located in Sangrur district. The project, known as the Mogha Burji 23185 project on the right of the Budhlada Branch, is being executed at a substantial cost of Rs 1.61 crore. During the inauguration, Cheema addressed local farmers and officials, outlining the project's immediate benefits.
Dual Benefits: Cost Savings and Enhanced Soil Fertility
Minister Cheema emphasized that this initiative is designed to provide quick relief to the agricultural community. The primary advantages highlighted include:
- Reduced Irrigation Costs: Farmers will be liberated from dependence on expensive diesel-powered pumps, significantly lowering their input expenses.
- Improved Soil Health: Canal water is recognized by agricultural experts for containing higher levels of essential nutrients compared to groundwater. Its use is expected to restore soil fertility and boost long-term crop productivity.
Cheema stressed that the government's objective is to complete the project at the earliest so farmers can start reaping these benefits without any unnecessary delay.
Promoting Sports Alongside Development
Earlier on the same day, the Finance Minister also attended the 41st Kabaddi Cup in Gidriani village, demonstrating the government's parallel focus on youth and sports. He interacted with players, encouraging them to strive for excellence. Furthermore, he reviewed the progress of a new sports stadium under construction in the village with an investment of Rs 46 lakh.
Cheema reiterated the Punjab government's commitment to fostering a strong sports culture across the state. He stated that such initiatives are vital for shaping disciplined and healthy youth, steering them away from social evils and towards productive avenues.
This integrated approach, combining critical agricultural infrastructure with investments in community sports, underscores a holistic development strategy for the region's rural areas.
