Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Kamaljit Singh Ubhi and Sweety Kakria were elected president and vice-president, respectively, of the Ahmedgarh Municipal Council during a special meeting on Saturday. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajesh Kumar Sharma and executive officer Ashish Kumar conducted the polls.
All 18 members attend House meeting
The meeting was attended by all 18 members of the council, including Amargarh MLA Jaswant Singh Gajjanmajra, who is an associate member of the House. The election saw a smooth process despite political tensions.
Political realignments ahead of polls
In the recent municipal elections, seven AAP members had won. A Congress councillor later switched allegiance to the AAP, strengthening the party's position. To oppose AAP candidates, five Congress councillors, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor, and two independents had formed a front. However, two members of this front defected, leading other councillors to walk out in protest.
Allegations of coercion and counterclaims
The opposing councillors alleged that the government had “coerced” the turncoats to ensure AAP's victory. However, MLA Gajjanmajra maintained that the election had been conducted in a transparent and fair manner, dismissing the allegations as baseless.
Impact on local governance
The election of Ubhi and Kakria is expected to consolidate AAP's control over the Ahmedgarh Municipal Council, enabling the party to implement its development agenda in the region. The council now has a clear majority for AAP, which may expedite decision-making and project execution.
