AIADMK MLA Challenges Election Commission's Rate Chart in Madurai
AIADMK MLA Sellur K Raju has formally raised significant concerns regarding the election commission's district-wise rate chart established for election campaigns in Madurai. In a detailed letter submitted to District Election Officer and Collector K J Praveen Kumar on Sunday, Raju highlighted troubling inconsistencies between government-mandated prices and the prevailing market rates for various campaign-related materials and services.
Discrepancies in Pricing Structure
The MLA pointed out that the official rate chart in Madurai was set substantially higher than the current market value for numerous items essential during electioneering. Furthermore, he noted that several items were charged on a full-day basis in the official chart, whereas candidates typically rent these items on an hourly basis. This pricing structure, Raju argued, artificially inflates a candidate's recorded election expenditure and could lead to serious financial discrepancies in expense reports.
Comparative Analysis of 46 Items
To substantiate his claims, Raju attached a comprehensive comparative list of 46 different items commonly used during election campaigns. He provided specific examples of the glaring differences between official rates and market prices. For instance, the official rate for a drone camera was listed at Rs 1,572, while the actual market price stands at just Rs 500. Similar discrepancies were identified for other essential items including:
- Temporary sheds (pandals)
- Plastic chairs
- Public address systems
- Various other campaign materials
Call for Realistic Rate Alignment
Raju strongly urged the district administration to conduct a thorough re-evaluation of the price list and align it with current market values. He emphasized that a realistic and accurate rate chart is absolutely necessary to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Without such adjustments, candidates could potentially face unfair penalties due to over-calculated expense reports that do not reflect actual spending patterns.
Administrative Response and Political Support
The collector's office has acknowledged the concerns raised by the AIADMK MLA and stated that the matter will be properly reviewed. Raju was accompanied by fellow AIADMK MLAs V V Rajan Chellappa and R B Udayakumar when filing the formal complaint with the collector, demonstrating party unity on this important electoral issue. This collective approach underscores the significance of ensuring fair and transparent election expenditure calculations for all political candidates in the region.
