In a significant boost to urban infrastructure in Ambala, Haryana's Energy, Transport, and Labour Minister, Anil Vij, announced on Monday that the crucial regulatory hurdles for a new pedestrian subway have been cleared. The project aims to seamlessly connect the Ambala Cantonment bus stand with the railway station.
NOCs Issued, Construction Directive Given
The necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) have been formally issued by both the Northern Railway and the State Transport Department. Following this pivotal approval, Minister Vij has instructed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) office in Ambala to accelerate the construction process. The directive emphasizes starting the work at the earliest possible date to ensure the facility is completed swiftly for public benefit.
Modern Design and Joint Inspection
The proposed subway is designed to meet contemporary infrastructure standards. It will be equipped with essential amenities including proper lighting, efficient drainage systems, and other facilities to ensure user safety and convenience. Prior to the grant of the NOCs, a detailed joint inspection was carried out by officials from NHAI, Northern Railway, and the State Transport Department.
This inspection confirmed that the proposed design faces no obstructions. The officials also held discussions on various aspects to guarantee smooth pedestrian movement once the structure is operational.
Project Specifications and Public Impact
As per the approved plan, the subway will be approximately 60 metres long. It will be constructed near the GT Road-side exit of the bus stand and will pass beneath the busy National Highway-44 (GT Road), providing a direct link to the railway station's parking area. To tackle potential monsoon issues, pumps will be installed to prevent waterlogging inside the passage.
Minister Vij highlighted that this project will dramatically improve connectivity and safety for thousands of daily commuters. The subway will eliminate the need for passengers to risk crossing the heavily trafficked GT Road, thereby creating a safe, enclosed pathway between the city's two major transportation hubs. This initiative is expected to significantly ease pedestrian movement and reduce congestion on the road above.
