Massive Firecracker Unit Blast in Andhra Pradesh Kills 20, Injures 12
Andhra Firecracker Blast: 20 Dead, 12 Injured in Kakinada

Deadly Explosion at Firecracker Factory in Andhra Pradesh Claims Multiple Lives

A catastrophic explosion rocked a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem village, located in Andhra Pradesh's Kakinada district, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a tragic loss of life and severe injuries. The blast, which occurred around 2:10 PM, has left at least 20 people dead and 12 others seriously injured, with officials warning that the death toll could rise as many of the injured are in critical condition and unlikely to survive.

Details of the Tragedy and Suspected Causes

Local residents reported hearing a deafening explosion followed by thick smoke and a massive fire that engulfed the premises. The intensity of the blast was so severe that body parts of the victims were recovered far from the unit, and the odour of burnt human flesh lingered almost half a kilometer away. Rescue teams, including the state disaster response force, faced harrowing conditions, wading through strewn human body parts and a putrid smell to shift the injured from the blast site.

Fire officials have not yet identified the exact cause of the explosion, but they suspect that a small spark may have ignited a large amount of raw material, including charcoal powder, sulphur, and potassium, stored in the unit's sheds. District fire officer Saikrishna Rajesh noted that an explosion of this magnitude was not possible with just the permissible limit of 15 kg of chemicals, indicating that the unit may have stockpiled chemicals beyond legal limits. The unit reportedly had permission to manufacture small crackers but was also producing large ones, potentially violating regulations.

Victims and Aftermath of the Blast

Most of the workers in the unit were women from nearby villages, though the exact number of employees at the time of the accident remains unknown due to the owner's absence. The unit owner, Adabala Nani, is absconding, while his father, Adabala Srinu, was present during the blast and is among the victims. The 20 bodies recovered from the rubble were charred beyond recognition, and nine of the injured were admitted to Govt General Hospital in Kakinada, all in critical condition.

The explosion caused widespread damage, with glass windows and electronic gadgets in nearby homes shattered, leaving residents, particularly the elderly and children, deeply shaken. Many villagers working in nearby fields were unable to reach the accident spot in time due to the intense heat. By the time the fire was extinguished, the entire premises were reduced to ashes.

Response from Authorities and Historical Context

In response to the tragedy, the state government has ordered an inquiry into the cause of the explosion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu have expressed their condolences. Modi announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured, while Naidu cut short his official visit to north coastal Andhra to camp in Kakinada and monitor relief and rescue operations.

This incident marks the biggest tragedy in a firecracker unit in Andhra Pradesh in recent memory, surpassing the previous highest toll of 11 deaths recorded in 2014. The north coastal Andhra and Konaseema region is known for its numerous firecracker units, both legal and illegal, with several past instances of explosions leading to casualties. Officials revealed that the unit was receiving large orders due to the ongoing marriage season and had employed more workers to meet the increased demand, highlighting the pressures that may have contributed to the disaster.
