VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday expressed deep concern over the state's declining population growth, urging citizens to view children as the nation's "wealth" rather than a burden. Speaking at the Swarna Andhra–Swachh Andhra programme in Narasannapeta, Naidu emphasized that the demographic trend requires urgent attention and proactive measures.
Financial Incentives for Larger Families
As part of the state's population policy push, the chief minister announced financial incentives to encourage families to have more children. The government will provide Rs 30,000 to families upon the birth of a third child and Rs 40,000 for the birth of a fourth child. These incentives are designed to alleviate some of the financial concerns associated with raising larger families.
Broader Demographic Concerns
Naidu's remarks come amid wider discussions across several Indian states regarding shifting population trends, including declining birth rates and an ageing demographic profile. The chief minister stressed that children are essential for the nation's future prosperity and should not be seen as economic burdens. He called for a collective effort to reverse the declining trend, ensuring sustainable population growth.
The programme also highlighted the importance of cleanliness and sanitation under the Swarna Andhra–Swachh Andhra initiative, linking public health and hygiene to overall demographic well-being. Naidu urged local bodies and communities to participate actively in maintaining cleanliness, which he said is crucial for a healthy population.
Andhra Pradesh's population policy aims to address the long-term implications of low fertility rates, which could lead to a shrinking workforce and increased dependency ratio. The financial incentives are part of a larger strategy to stabilize and gradually increase the state's population, ensuring economic and social stability in the decades to come.
