Hyderabad Auto Driver Receives Police Commissioner's Recognition for Heroic Fire Rescue Role
In an inspiring display of civic responsibility, Neelam Dinesh, an auto-rickshaw driver from Afzalgunj in Hyderabad, became an unexpected hero during a devastating fire incident. When Dinesh received a call about the massive blaze at a furniture showroom in Nampally on Saturday, he didn't merely rush to the scene as a curious bystander—he immediately positioned himself as an active participant in the rescue operations.
Twenty-Four Hours of Unwavering Assistance Amidst Flames and Smoke
Dinesh dedicated nearly an entire day, approximately 24 hours, to supporting fire and police personnel as they battled the dangerous inferno. Despite the building being engulfed in intense flames and thick, choking smoke, he steadfastly refused to leave the site. His persistent efforts made him one of only five civilians who courageously stepped forward to assist the emergency response teams during this critical situation.
"I reached the spot within 10 minutes after getting the call while I was in Himayatnagar," Dinesh recounted to media representatives. "The fire was so intense that entering the building was impossible. We remained outside, following all instructions from officials to ensure safety and effectiveness."
From Auto Driver to Temporary Firefighter: Hands-On Rescue Contributions
During the prolonged rescue mission, Dinesh provided practical assistance by moving heavy objects and helping control the spreading blaze. He described moments where he felt transformed into an impromptu firefighter himself, actively working to douse flames and clear pathways so that professional teams could attempt to access the building's interior.
The tragedy held profound personal significance for Dinesh, who was acquainted with T Yadaiah, father of two children—Praneeth Kumar (11) and Akhil Kumar—both of whom were among the five fatalities confirmed in the fire accident. "Every year during Ganesh festival, we set up a pandal near that commercial complex. I frequently saw the children because their father would interact with us. Thinking about them deeply moved me," he shared emotionally.
Republic Day Felicitation by Hyderabad Police Commissioner
In recognition of his exceptional dedication, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar formally felicitated Dinesh during the Republic Day celebrations at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) headquarters on Monday. This honor highlighted how ordinary citizens can make extraordinary contributions during community emergencies.
Reflecting on the rescue attempts, Dinesh acknowledged the fire's overwhelming intensity limited opportunities to save lives. "From Saturday when the fire broke out until Sunday afternoon, I stayed continuously at the site. We did everything within our power," he stated, underscoring the team's relentless commitment despite challenging circumstances.
Historic Republic Day Celebration at Revived Heritage Venue
The Republic Day event itself carried additional historical significance, as Commissioner Sajjanar hoisted the national flag at the old commissioner's office in Purani Haveli—a location that hadn't hosted such ceremonies for 24 years. Following the flag hoisting, the commissioner took a guard of honor and oversaw a ceremonial parade at the CAR headquarters.
This return to tradition gained special meaning as the heritage building had undergone revival renovations only months earlier, symbolizing both preservation of history and recognition of contemporary community heroes like Neelam Dinesh.
