A political storm has erupted in Karnataka following the arrest of a woman BJP worker in Hubballi, with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the police presenting starkly contrasting versions of the events that transpired on January 1. The controversy centers on a viral video and allegations of misconduct during the arrest.
Conflicting Narratives Emerge
The BJP has leveled serious allegations against the Hubballi police, claiming that one of its female workers was assaulted and her clothes were torn during the arrest. This accusation came after a video surfaced on social media showing the woman surrounded by both male and female police personnel inside a bus. The party asserts that the alleged mistreatment occurred when the worker resisted arrest and raised objections to the police action.
However, Hubballi-Dharwad Commissioner of Police N Shashikumar has provided a completely different account, firmly denying any police misconduct. In his clarification, Shashikumar stated that the woman undressed herself in an attempt to flee from police custody and evade arrest. He emphasized that the police personnel acted appropriately throughout the incident.
Police Version of the Events
Detailing the sequence of events, CP Shashikumar explained that the situation began on January 1 during a survey conducted by local authorities in Chalukya Nagar, within the limits of the Keshwapur police station. A disagreement and scuffle broke out among residents, prompting police intervention to restore order.
In connection with this incident, three fresh cases were registered against the woman seen in the video. She was arrested specifically in connection with one case where a resident accused her of attempting to kill him. Shashikumar further revealed that the individual has a significant history with the law, stating, "She has five cases registered against her in previous years, and this year, four cases are registered." In total, she faces about nine cases.
Clarification on the Viral Video
Addressing the video circulating on media and social media platforms, the police chief provided a step-by-step rebuttal. "While she was taken to the police vehicle, she was still wearing clothes," Shashikumar said. "When she was taken inside the vehicle, she took her clothes off and threw them away. Our women police staff brought her clothes and made her wear them."
He categorically labeled the information about police misbehavior as "completely incorrect." The police maintain that their staff, particularly the women officers, acted with restraint and followed protocol, even assisting the woman in getting dressed after she allegedly disrobed herself.
Investigation and Aftermath
Commissioner Shashikumar confirmed that a further investigation into the entire matter is currently underway. The incident has added to the political tensions in the state, with the BJP using the allegation to criticize the state's law and order machinery.
The case highlights the often-contentious relationship between political parties and law enforcement, especially in sensitive situations. With both sides sticking to their narratives, the truth hinges on the ongoing police investigation and any potential independent inquiry that may follow.
