The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its candidate for the upcoming Bankipur assembly bypoll in Bihar, following the withdrawal of earlier pick Abhishek Sinha from the race. The by-election, necessitated by the resignation of sitting MLA and former minister Nand Kishore Yadav, is scheduled for July 10, 2026.
Abhishek Sinha Steps Down
Abhishek Sinha, who was initially announced as the BJP candidate, withdrew his candidature on July 8, citing personal reasons. In a letter to the party leadership, Sinha expressed gratitude for the opportunity but stated that he was unable to contest due to unforeseen family commitments. The BJP quickly moved to name Neeraj Kumar Sinha as the replacement, with the party's central election committee approving the change.
Neeraj Kumar Sinha, a former district president of the BJP's youth wing, is seen as a loyal party worker with grassroots connections in the Bankipur constituency. He has been active in local politics for over a decade and has served in various organizational roles.
Bankipur Bypoll Significance
The Bankipur seat, located in Patna district, is a traditional BJP stronghold. It fell vacant after Nand Kishore Yadav resigned in May 2026 to take up a position as chairman of the Bihar State Industrial Development Corporation. Yadav had represented the constituency since 2015 and won the last assembly election in 2025 by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
The bypoll is crucial for the BJP as it seeks to maintain its hold on the seat amid a resurgent opposition in Bihar. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has announced its candidate, while the Janata Dal (United) is yet to finalize its nominee. The election will test the BJP's organizational strength in the state capital region.
Campaign Strategy
Neeraj Kumar Sinha has already begun campaigning, focusing on development works initiated by the state and central governments. He is highlighting the construction of roads, improvement in water supply, and cleanliness drives in the constituency. The BJP is also banking on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's governance record.
On the other hand, the opposition is expected to corner the BJP on issues like unemployment and inflation. The RJD candidate, Shashi Yadav, has alleged that the BJP's internal feud led to the change in candidate, calling it a sign of weakness.
Voter Turnout Expectations
Bankipur has approximately 2.5 lakh voters, with a significant number of upper-caste and urban voters. The bypoll is seen as a litmus test for the BJP's alliance with the JD(U) in Bihar. Political analysts predict a voter turnout of around 50-55%, similar to previous bypolls in the area.
Neeraj Kumar Sinha, in his first media interaction after being named candidate, said, "I am grateful to the party leadership for this opportunity. I will work tirelessly to address the concerns of the people and ensure the BJP's victory." He also urged party workers to unite and work for a decisive win.
