BJP Postpones Release of Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Candidate List
In a significant development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially postponed the release of its candidate list for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The announcement was made by Union Minister and Tamil Nadu poll in-charge Piyush Goyal, who arrived in Chennai on Tuesday, stating that the list would be unveiled within the next two days.
Reasons Behind the Delay
With only three working days remaining for the filing of nominations, the party has yet to finalize its candidates. According to party insiders, the primary reason for deferring the announcement is last-minute efforts to swap a few seats with the AIADMK. These negotiations aim to secure segments considered more favorable for the BJP, thereby optimizing their electoral strategy.
There was considerable anticipation that Goyal would announce the candidates upon his arrival in Chennai. This expectation was heightened when former state president K. Annamalai, who was campaigning in Puducherry, rushed to Chennai via helicopter after being summoned to the party headquarters. Many speculated that his name might be included in the candidate list, but the party high command has not yet finalized the names.
Internal Concerns and Campaign Impact
A senior state leader who attended the meeting expressed concern over the delay, noting that while rival parties like the DMK, AIADMK, and even TVK have already released their candidate lists and begun campaigning, the BJP's uncertainty could affect their canvassing efforts. "With limited time left, not knowing who will contest where hampers our ability to mobilize support effectively," the leader stated.
When questioned about the timeline, BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran indicated that candidates are likely to file their official nominations on April 4, suggesting a tight schedule ahead.
Goyal's Chargesheet Against DMK Government
Amid the candidate list delay, Piyush Goyal released a detailed "chargesheet" against the incumbent DMK government. He alleged a significant increase in crimes against various groups, including women, children, Dalits, Hindus, youth, and farmers. Citing specific data, Goyal pointed out that POCSO cases rose from 4,968 in 2022 to 6,969 in 2024, and accused DMK functionaries of involvement in sexual offences, while questioning the government's response to these issues.
Goyal also highlighted alleged corruption cases, such as a Rs 4,700-crore illegal sand mining scandal, problems related to TASMAC, and cash-for-job cases in the municipal administration department. He asserted that if a new government is formed, action would be taken to address these matters.
Comments on TVK and Electoral Predictions
Earlier, at the airport, Goyal commented on the political landscape, stating that TVK president Vijay's fan base would not necessarily translate into votes. He predicted that the party would not secure more than three or four seats in the 2026 elections, downplaying their electoral impact.
As the election date approaches, the BJP's delayed candidate list release adds a layer of uncertainty to the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, with all eyes now on the upcoming announcements and their implications for the campaign trail.
