NEW DELHI: In a significant electoral shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Amiya Kisku emerged victorious in the Nayagram constituency of Jhargram district, defeating the sitting Trinamool Congress MLA Dular Murmu by a margin of 6,424 votes. According to the Election Commission, Kisku secured 100,857 votes, while Murmu, who was seeking a fourth consecutive term, polled 94,433 votes.
The Nayagram seat, a Scheduled Tribe-reserved constituency located in the forested Junglemahal belt, has historically been a stronghold of the Left, particularly the Communist Party of India (Marxist), under leaders like Bhutnath Saren and Ananta Saren. However, the political landscape shifted decisively in favor of the Trinamool Congress with Dular Murmu's victories in 2011, 2016, and 2021, signaling a durable realignment of tribal support in the region.
In the 2021 assembly election, Dular Murmu had won comfortably, securing 100,903 votes (approximately 52%) against BJP's Bakul Murmu, who polled 78,149 votes (around 41%), giving him a winning margin of 22,754 votes. This time, however, the tables turned as Amiya Kisku managed to overturn the TMC's advantage.

The Nayagram constituency, carved out of the forested Junglemahal belt, faces several persistent challenges that center on Adivasi livelihoods and basic services. Key demands include secure land and forest rights, minor irrigation facilities for paddy and vegetable cultivation, better prices and storage options for small farmers and forest-produce gatherers, improved road connectivity from remote villages to Block headquarters in Nayagram and to towns like Jhargram and Medinipur, expansion of government health centers, and residential schooling and hostels for Scheduled Tribe students.
Political Significance
The Nayagram seat falls under the Jhargram Lok Sabha constituency, which is currently held by Trinamool Congress MP Kalipada Soren. Soren won the 2024 general election by a margin of over 1.7 lakh votes, indicating that while the TMC retains its parliamentary stronghold, the assembly segment has witnessed a shift in favor of the BJP. This divergence in voting patterns highlights the complex political dynamics in this sensitive border-forest region.
