BJP's Biraj Biswas, 32, Becomes Youngest Minister in WB Cabinet

KOLKATA: BJP MLA Biraj Biswas made history on Monday by becoming the youngest member of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's Council of Ministers at just 32 years of age. Biswas, who represents the Karandighi constituency in Uttar Dinajpur, took the oath of office as Minister of State at Lok Bhavan alongside 34 senior leaders.

Strong Performance in North Bengal

The BJP's impressive electoral performance in north Bengal has significantly influenced the composition of the new Council of Ministers. Several legislators from this region were sworn in, reflecting the party's growing strength in the area. In the recent Assembly election, Biswas defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Gautam Pal, who was seeking re-election from Karandighi, by a margin of nearly 20,000 votes.

A Mother's Pride

Biswas's mother, Bina Biswas, expressed her joy and pride in an interview with PTI. "I am proud to have given birth to such a son. Today, his dream has come true, and I am very happy," she said. Recalling his early interest in public life, she noted that her son had often spoken about joining politics while still a student. "He would always say that he would continue his studies seriously but remain active in politics and one day become a minister. It was his dream," she added.

Political Journey and Background

Biswas's elevation marks another significant milestone in a political career that began with student activism and developed through years of organizational work within the BJP and its affiliated bodies. Associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Biswas started his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), gradually rising through its ranks. He served as the ABVP's state secretary before being appointed all-India secretary. A law graduate, he first drew political attention during protests over the killing of two students in alleged firing and bombing incidents at Daribhit High School in Islampur in September 2018.

Recognition of Youthful Leadership

Party leaders view Biswas's induction as a reflection of the BJP's effort to blend youthful leadership with administrative experience. Consequently, Biswas has gained popularity among citizens and within political circles. His mother reiterated, "He always believed he would reach this position one day. Today, that dream has come true."
