The city of Silchar bid a solemn and dignified farewell to veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union Minister, Kabindra Purkayastha, on Thursday. The senior politician was accorded full state honours at his cremation, a ceremony marked by reverence and the presence of prominent party figures.

Final Journey with State Protocol

The last rites for Kabindra Purkayastha were performed at the Silchar cremation ground. In a gesture befitting his stature and service, the Assam Police presented a solemn three-gun salute during the ceremony. The funeral rituals were led by his son, MP Kanad Purkayastha, who performed the final rites for his father.

Leaders Pay Their Respects

Earlier in the day, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. BJP Assam president Dilip Saikia paid his floral respects at the District Sports Association ground. At the cremation site itself, a wreath was laid on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, signifying the state government's homage to the departed leader.

A Procession Through the City

The final journey of Kabindra Purkayastha was a public affair, reflecting his deep connection with the people. His remains were first taken to his family residence, allowing for a private moment of mourning. They were then taken to the local BJP office, enabling party workers and supporters to pay their last respects. From there, a large procession accompanied the mortal remains to the crematorium, showcasing the widespread respect he commanded in the Barak Valley region.

The ceremony concluded with the state honours, drawing the curtains on the life of a significant political figure from Assam. The event underscored the BJP's tribute to one of its senior leaders from the northeastern state.
