BNP slams 'public funds poured into roads that need no repair'

BNP accuses BBMP of misallocating road repair funds

The Bengaluru NavaNirmana Party (BNP) has accused the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) of diverting public funds to roads that are already in good condition, while many roads in the city's outskirts remain in a state of disrepair. In a statement released on 9 July 2026, BNP leaders highlighted that a significant portion of the road maintenance budget has been spent on arterial roads that do not require immediate attention, leaving peripheral areas neglected.

Disparity in road conditions across Bengaluru

According to BNP, roads in the central business district and well-off neighbourhoods have received repeated resurfacing and upgrades, whereas roads in areas such as Kengeri, Yelahanka, and Whitefield are riddled with potholes and cracks. “The BBMP has poured crores of rupees into roads that need no repair, while citizens in the outskirts struggle with unsafe and damaged roads,” said a BNP spokesperson. The party cited data from a recent survey showing that over 60% of roads in the outskirts are in poor condition, compared to less than 20% in the city centre.

Demand for transparent allocation of funds

The BNP has called for a comprehensive audit of the BBMP's road maintenance expenditure and a transparent system for prioritising repairs based on road condition surveys. They have also urged the state government to intervene and ensure that funds are directed to areas with the greatest need. “Public money must be used equitably. The current approach is both inefficient and unfair to residents of the outskirts,” the spokesperson added.

BBMP response and next steps

The BBMP has not yet issued an official response to the allegations. However, sources indicate that the civic body may review its road maintenance schedule in light of the criticism. BNP has announced plans to submit a formal complaint to the Karnataka Lokayukta and to stage protests if no action is taken within a month. The party also urged citizens to report poor road conditions through the BBMP's online portal to ensure accountability.
