A local leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) was brutally killed in the Suryapet district of Telangana on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the political landscape. The victim, identified as 45-year-old G. Venkateshwarlu, was a prominent figure in the party and was known for his active involvement in local issues. According to police reports, the incident occurred late in the evening when unidentified assailants attacked him with sharp weapons near his residence in the Kodad mandal. Venkateshwarlu was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Political Reactions
The killing has drawn sharp condemnation from political parties across the spectrum. BRS leaders have alleged that the murder was politically motivated and have demanded a thorough investigation. Party workers gathered at the spot, staging protests and blocking traffic, demanding justice. The ruling Congress party has also expressed condolences and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to book. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy ordered the Director General of Police to personally monitor the case and ensure swift action.
Police Investigation
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are probing possible motives, including personal enmity and political rivalry. Preliminary investigations suggest that Venkateshwarlu had received threats recently, but no formal complaint was filed. Authorities are examining CCTV footage from the area and questioning locals to gather leads. A special investigation team has been formed to expedite the case.
The incident has heightened political tensions in the region, with both BRS and Congress accusing each other of fostering a climate of violence. BRS leaders have called for a bandh (strike) in the district to protest the killing. Meanwhile, the state government has assured full security to political workers and urged calm.
This is the second such incident in recent months, raising concerns about the safety of political activists in the state. Opposition parties have criticized the law and order situation under the current administration. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children.
