Cash Video Featuring Trinamool Neta Triggers Barasat Row

A controversial video showing stacks of cash on a table with a local Trinamool Congress leader and a businessman has ignited a major political controversy in Barasat, North 24 Parganas. The footage has triggered accusations and denials, creating a storm in West Bengal's political landscape.

The Viral Video and Its Key Figures

The video, which has been widely circulated, depicts bundles of Indian currency notes, reportedly of Rs 500 denomination, laid out on a table. Seated around it are individuals identified as Md Giyasuddin Mondal, the vice-president of Barasat panchayat samiti-I, and Rakibul Islam, a local businessman. Two other persons are seen in the video counting the wads of cash. The authenticity of this video has not been independently verified by authorities.

Reacting to the allegations, Mondal has firmly denied any connection to the money shown. He claimed the video is old and his presence was incidental. "This is a very old video. I was simply sitting there and chatting with a few acquaintances. I have no connection with the money on the table whatsoever," Mondal stated.

Echoing a similar timeline, businessman Rakibul Islam said the incident captured occurred back in 2022. He explained the context, stating, "I was sitting with Mondal as a business partner at a house in Kazipara, Barasat. I believe the money was kept there in connection with a land transaction."

Political Reactions and Demands for Probe

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly seized upon the video to launch a sharp attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress. Tapas Mitra, a BJP leader from Barasat, used the incident to allege widespread corruption. "The incident shows how Bengal is being looted. Mondal and his associates should be taken into ED (Enforcement Directorate) custody to trace the source of the money," Mitra demanded.

Facing the heat, a Trinamool Congress leader addressed the controversy, indicating an internal review. The leader assured that the matter was being examined and appropriate legal action would follow if any party member was found involved in unlawful activities.

Fallout and Ongoing Scrutiny

The video has put the spotlight on Barasat, fueling a political slugfest between the two major parties. While the individuals in the video have provided explanations, the political opposition is pushing for a high-level investigation into the source and purpose of the substantial cash amount visible.

The episode underscores the ongoing tensions in West Bengal's politics, where such visual evidence often becomes a central tool for political attacks. The claims and counterclaims leave the public awaiting further investigation to establish the full facts behind the Barasat cash video.
