The forest department in Coimbatore district has taken swift action following a leopard attack on a local farm. On Saturday, officials installed four camera traps at Kuthadi thottam near Irugur. This response came after a leopard killed a goat on Thursday night.
Farmer Reports Carnivore Attack
Sivakumar, a farmer from the area, alerted forest department staff about the incident. He reported that the leopard entered his farmland late on Thursday and attacked his goat. Forest field staff visited the location promptly. They identified clear leopard pug marks at the site, confirming the carnivore's presence.
Monitoring Measures Implemented
A forest officer explained the department's strategy. Four camera traps have been fixed at the farmland to monitor the leopard's movements. Field staff have been deployed specifically for this monitoring operation. The cameras will help track the animal's activity patterns in the area.
Growing Concerns Among Local Residents
Farmers and local residents expressed serious concerns about increasing leopard encounters. They stated that incidents of leopards preying on pet animals and goats have become more frequent recently. One farmer highlighted ongoing issues, saying, "We have been noticing leopard movements in the surrounding areas for the past two months."
The community is calling for protective measures. The forest department should take necessary actions to protect our livestock, another farmer emphasized. The rising number of sightings has created anxiety among those living near forested zones.
Compensation Sought for Loss
Meanwhile, Sivakumar, whose goat was killed, has formally sought compensation from the government. This request follows the financial loss incurred due to the leopard attack. The forest department typically processes such claims when wildlife causes damage to property or livestock.
