Congress Chief Meets BJP Veteran Ahead of Rahul Gandhi's Indore Visit

Political circles in Madhya Pradesh buzzed with surprise on Friday morning. State Congress president Jitu Patwari paid an unexpected visit to the residence of former Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan in Indore. This meeting occurred just one day before Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's planned visit to the city.

A Surprise Morning Meeting

Many people wondered about the purpose of the state Congress chief meeting a senior BJP leader from the city. After their discussion, Sumitra Mahajan addressed the media. She stated that Jitu Patwari visits her occasionally and came again today. Mahajan explained that Patwari sought her guidance regarding the current water contamination crisis gripping Indore.

Rahul Gandhi's Scheduled Visit and Protests

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Indore on Saturday. His plan includes meeting families of victims from the Bhagirathpura water contamination tragedy. The Congress party had applied for permission to hold a public meeting. However, the state administration refused this request. Jitu Patwari also sought a meeting with all corporators of the Indore Municipal Corporation. This request too was disallowed by the authorities.

Rising Above Party Lines

Sumitra Mahajan shared details of their conversation. She quoted Patwari saying the Congress, being in opposition, will protest. But he emphasized that solutions must emerge by rising above party lines. They must work together to find a resolution. Mahajan agreed, recalling her own time in opposition. She noted that in a democracy, the opposition must perform its duties, including protesting on various issues.

Technical Expertise and Government Action

The former Lok Sabha speaker reminded Patwari about institutions in Indore like IIT, IIM, and GSITS. These institutes house technical experts who could assist. Mahajan stressed that the government should be taking the lead on this issue. She suggested the Congress could sit together, prepare a list of recommendations, and submit it to the government. Mahajan quipped that she did not offer any wrong advice during their talk.

No Discussion on Rahul Gandhi's Meeting

When asked if Rahul Gandhi would meet her during his Saturday visit, Sumitra Mahajan gave a clear response. She said no discussion took place on that matter. However, she added that if anyone wishes to come and meet her, she remains available at her residence.

Patwari's Statement to Reporters

Jitu Patwari spoke to reporters after the meeting. He confirmed they discussed the water supply situation in Indore. Patwari highlighted that the National Green Tribunal recently stated 70% of water in Madhya Pradesh is contaminated and undrinkable. He argued that everyone must rise above party politics to ensure safe drinking water reaches the city's residents. There should be no politics over water, he insisted. Patwari described his dialogue with the former Lok Sabha speaker as very positive and constructive.
