Political tensions have escalated in Uttarakhand as the opposition Congress party launched statewide protests on Saturday, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the high-profile Rishikesh resort murder case. The demonstrations come a day after a state minister declared the case closed.
Congress Takes to the Streets
Congress members held significant protests in key districts including Dehradun, Srinagar, and Udham Singh Nagar. The party has intensified its campaign over the past week, organizing candlelight marches and public demonstrations. At the heart of their demand is an alleged audio clip that has brought new claims to light.
The party has made a serious allegation against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal asserted that the BJP is attempting to shield a VIP and is deliberately avoiding a CBI investigation. "It was the responsibility of the police to investigate and gather evidence," Godiyal stated, questioning the motive behind the demolition of the resort room where the crime occurred with a bulldozer.
Minister's Firm Stance and the Audio Clip Controversy
On Friday, Uttarakhand cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal addressed the media at the BJP office, presenting the government's position. He emphasized that the case had been "thoroughly probed" by the police and the Special Investigation Team (SIT). Uniyal pointed out that the investigation led to the conviction of three accused, and the court was satisfied with the SIT's findings.
"Those making fresh allegations should come forward with evidence. The police had conducted a detailed investigation, following which the three accused were convicted," Minister Uniyal said. He firmly stated that there was no need for a CBI inquiry, as the existing probe was conclusive.
The fresh wave of demands was triggered by an audio clip circulated by Urmila Sanawar, who claims to be the second wife of former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore. The clip alleges the involvement of senior BJP leader Dushyant Gautam in the case. Gautam has vehemently denied these allegations.
A Deepening Political Row
The clash between the Congress and the BJP over this case highlights a deeper political battle in the state. The Congress's strategy involves keeping the issue in the public eye through sustained agitations, challenging the official narrative of a resolved case.
Key points of contention include:
- The thoroughness of the initial SIT investigation.
- The circumstances surrounding the demolition of the crime scene.
- The credibility of the new allegations presented via the audio clip.
With the state government refusing to budge and the opposition amplifying its calls for a central probe, the Rishikesh resort murder case has transformed from a criminal investigation into a significant political flashpoint in Uttarakhand. The public and political discourse now hinges on whether new, tangible evidence will emerge to justify reopening the case with a CBI investigation.
