Karnataka Congress MLA Issues Formal Apology Over Controversial Remarks on Mutt Seer
Srirangapatna Congress MLA AB Ramesh Bandisiddegowda has formally apologized following a significant controversy stemming from his recent public remarks about Nirmalanandanatha Swami, the revered head of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt. The incident has ignited widespread debate across political and religious circles in Karnataka.
MLA's Initial Comments Spark Outrage
Speaking at a public program in Mandya, the MLA expressed visible dissatisfaction in the presence of the seer. He explicitly stated that the religious leader should diligently follow the esteemed legacy of the late seer Balagangadharanatha Swami by taking everyone into confidence, maintaining strong emotional unity, and leading the prestigious institution without any discrimination between the rich and the poor.
These remarks quickly triggered a heated public debate, with many interpreting them as critical of the current seer's leadership style and the mutt's functioning.
Clarification and Apology Issued by MLA
In response to the escalating controversy, MLA Bandisiddegowda addressed reporters in Mandya to clarify his position. He acknowledged that his statements often become controversial regardless of his original intentions but firmly insisted that he never meant to imply that the Adichunchanagiri Mutt was functioning poorly.
"My comments were solely intended as a respectful request for the present seer to continue the inclusive and unifying legacy so beautifully established by the late seer, ensuring the institution continues to flourish and prosper," he explained.
MLA Downplays Significance and Expresses Regret
The Congress legislator further humbly stated that he does not consider himself significant enough to criticize a spiritual leader of Nirmalanandanatha Swami's stature. He described the entire issue as a minor slip of the tongue during his speech, attributing it to inadvertent phrasing.
Recognizing that members of the Vokkaliga Sangha and other community groups had taken offence, he expressed sincere regret for any hurt or misunderstanding caused by his words. He emphasized his deep respect for the seer and praised the ongoing efforts to expand the mutt's influence globally, reiterating his full support for all its initiatives.
Appeal to Public and Future Discussions
MLA Bandisiddegowda urged the public to put the controversy to rest, stressing that his only intention was to see the mutt serve more people effectively. Describing himself as a devoted follower of the institution, he appealed for his words not to be misinterpreted.
He also revealed that senior members associated with the mutt are scheduled to visit him soon for further discussions, indicating a move towards reconciliation and mutual understanding.
