Congress Panchayat Member-Elect Dies Before Oath in Kottayam

A tragic incident struck the local political scene in Kottayam district on Saturday when a newly elected member of the Meenadom grama panchayat passed away suddenly, just a day before he was scheduled to take his oath of office.

A Sudden Demise on the Eve of Swearing-In

The deceased has been identified as Prasad Narayanan, a 62-year-old Congress party member from the Cheeramkulam ward. According to reports, Narayanan began experiencing physical discomfort on Saturday afternoon. He initially sought medical treatment at the Pampady taluk hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was rushed to a private hospital in Kottayam. Despite medical efforts, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead, with the cause attributed to a cardiac arrest.

A Legacy of Three Decades in Public Service

Prasad Narayanan was no newcomer to grassroots democracy. His passing marks the end of a long and dedicated political career. He had served as a public representative for an impressive three decades, having been elected from various wards within the Meenadom panchayat in the last six consecutive elections. The recent local body polls saw him achieve a seventh victory, this time from the Cheeramkulam ward, which is a seat reserved for Scheduled Castes.

Final Rites and Surviving Family

The untimely death has left the local community and his political associates in mourning. The funeral for Prasad Narayanan is set to be held on Tuesday at his family residence. He is survived by his wife, Preetha Prasad, and his son, Hari Narayanan. His death, on the cusp of beginning a new term, has cast a pall of sorrow over Meenadom, cutting short a lifetime of committed service to the panchayat.
