In a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party in its stronghold Churah of Chamba district, the Congress secured control of the Block Development Council in Tissa block after its supported candidates won both posts of chairman and vice-chairman in elections held on Tuesday. Congress-backed candidate Chain Lal was elected BDC Chairman, defeating BJP-supported candidate Hilo Devi. Shakuntla Devi, the Congress nominee for the vice-chairperson’s post, also emerged victorious over BJP-backed candidate Mehro.
Election Results and Vote Count
The Congress candidates got 10 votes each while BJP nominees could secure only eight votes. Soon after the results were declared, Congress workers and supporters celebrated the victory by distributing sweets and congratulating the newly elected office-bearers.
Newly Elected Leaders' Commitments
Expressing gratitude to the elected members for reposing faith in him, newly elected BDC Chairman Chain Lal said his priority would be the overall development of Tissa block, addressing public issues and resolving problems faced by panchayats. He assured that development works would be carried out with the cooperation of all elected members. Vice-Chairperson Shakuntla Devi also thanked the members for their support and pledged to work for the development of the region while living up to the expectations of the people.
Political Significance Ahead of Assembly Polls
The outcome is being seen as a significant political gain for the Congress in Churah Assembly constituency ahead of the Assembly poll slated for next year. The victory marks a notable shift in a region traditionally considered a BJP stronghold, potentially influencing electoral dynamics.
